Changing Windows XP Search To Old (better!) Format

I spent way too long looking for this, and had it before but lost it… long story… anyway, here it is, for my archival purposes!

Changing the Windows XP search to make it look like the Windows 2000 search. (winxp to win2k / win2000 search engine format)

I've really got nothing against the "search assistant" that comes with the Windows XP search, but did they have to make turning on "search system folders" "search hidden files and folders" so difficult?

If you want to revert to the windows 2000 search box, you need to add a string value registry key Use Search Asst set to no, in the windows registry at location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER->Software->Microsoft Windows->CurrentVersion->Explorer->CabinetState

Can't figure out how to do all that? I've included the code for two reg files, just copy the following text into notepad:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState]
"Use Search Asst"="no"

And name the file: make_it_look_like_windows_2000_search.reg

Then save, double click on it, and open up windows search, there should be no more search assistant, however you sill have to click: "Advanced options" to turn on all the specific flags, but it's easier this way.

You can turn the search assistant back on by copying:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState]
"Use Search Asst"="yes"

into notepad and then name it: make_it_look_like_windows_xp_search.reg

then double click on this file to turn the search assistant back on.

Amazon Prevented SkyNets Judgement Day?

I saw this tweet and thought "So that's why…" :-)

I know there is a reason for this, but it is still a FAIL…

"Lecture Capture" software company DEMO FAIL:

Why is it a fail? You should not be REQUIRED to enter your contact information just to view a demo. Sure, it is information that is important for sales to capture. I read it as "We want to be able to contact you after you have seen the BAD DEMO so we can try to CHANGE YOUR MIND" and that, in my book, is a FAIL.

Show off your demo, let it stand on its own merits. If people view it and think "This sucks!" or "Not what I was looking for…" then so be it. Your call/email/snailmail will not change their mind.

Your demo(s) should be able to present the best of what your product does, and that will motivate the POTENTIAL customer to contact you so they can become an ACTUAL customer. It should not have to rely on a follow up contact to basically tell the customer why they were wrong for NOT contacting the company to become a customer, which is what would happen if you filled out the form, tried the demo and it sucked, and then they called.

Your product should market itself, and make people want to need it. Not require sales folk to try to convince you that your opinions are wrong…

Oh yea, and what happens if you fill out the form, try to demo and it sucks, and you move on? They contact you, you say no, but guess what, they still have your contact information! They could use it for future product upgrades, other products or heck, they could even 'share the information with some of our value-added partners' which you probably do not want contact from in the first place!

As I said: DEMO FAIL… In my opinion… and no, I did not enter my information. Not even fake information… Tempting though… ;-)
